Michaels letter to Darkside Magazine (issue 102):

Congratulations on coming up to the 100th edition, especially after facing adversity over the years. I've been a reader since issue 26, where you featured Braindead. I was an art student back then wanting to get into movie make-up effects, and your Braindead review made me go and see the film. A revelation. Not only did it make me want to get into film-making (I made my first 43 minute short when I was nineteen, and it got a special mention at the 31st Czech International Film Festival), it also made me aware of the genius that is Peter Jackson. A footnote to this is that Peter Jackson sent me a personal letter of congratulations after my film was shown (what a nice bloke), which is more than most in the UK (terrible film industry, but not the time or the place for a rant).

Now I'm a low-budget film-maker making my first feature, Diary of a Bad Lad. A real labour of love! If you could give us a mention sometime, that would be great. I will send you a copy as soon as we finish it. It is 90% complete, but we need to shoot all of the pyrotechnics and gore now (all of the stuff that costs money - thanks go to our kind investors!) I have attached a prosthetics test so you can see what direction we are heading in! It's an ambition to make a low-budget zombie movie, I have a script, I have the gory effects, just got to get that money together. I reckon I could shoot one for £15,000 on S16mm, probably less on DV.

Darkside editor Allan Bryce replied: Well that makes me feel really good, Michael, the thought that my mag has inspired someone to go out and do something about a career in making movies. Good luck to you, and we'll certainly cover your production when it's finished!
