Diary of a Bad Lad: Special pre-release screening with Q & A - UPDATED
Posted: May 12, 2008

Manchester’s Kinofilm Festival is back with a series of feature screenings commencing in June with the North West produced feature “Diary of a Bad Lad”.

Diary of a Bad Lad showing at The Green Room

Diary of a Bad Lad was developed through a number of test screenings - an earlier cut was screened at the 10th Anniversary Kinofilm Festival in 2006 - and it was finally completed in May 2007. By then the film had been 'discovered' by Sumners, Manchester's premier post-production house, where Jamie Parry transformed it's 'look' by not only giving it a consistent colour balance, but also in places an even dirtier and degraded quality, before upgrading the whole film to high-definition.

The idea behind this latest season of Kino screenings is to highlight the wealth of talent in the North West currently producing low budget features. Kino Director John Wojowski says; “this is the best independent feature I have personally seen from the North West in over 15 years and is far superior to the current latest indie Brit flick “In Bruges”. These guys came out of nowhere and produced a film which left a lasting impression on me – this is why it deserves another screening in it’s completed state. This is raw film making in the purest sense – a film which needs to be seen. Don’t miss it”.

A film about property rackets, pornography, prostitution, drugs… and the media.

“The best film to come out of the North West in a decade!” Danny Moran, Citylife Magazine

“I was totally taken in that this fiction film was an actual documentary… I was moved to horror, anger and outrage as I watched it, ready to protest to the organisers who screened it about how they could condone such journalism. Right up till the very end I thought I was watching a documentary about drugs, pornography and rape. But the real story, about the media's lack of ethics, crept up on me, caught me unawares; without me realising it I began judging the crew, in particular the presenter, for his incalculably inhumane and opportunistic behaviour. An excellent film.”
Kothai Kanthan, filmmaker, documentarist and ex-BBC reporter

“A jet-black comedy that shows what British independents could and should be doing.”

Ben Blaine, Shooting People.org.

“The genius of this staggeringly-realistic faux documentary is that its black humour makes you laugh even as another part of you is thinking, "Oh my god - what these people are doing is horrific." It entertains hugely for an hour and a half, but leaves you with many unsettling thoughts on both the horrors of the crimes committed by the "Bad Lad" Tommy and the exploitative nature of the media and the ethics of journalists. These themes have never been more relevant…Damn-near perfect…”
Neil Oseman, director and cinematographer

“One of the best films I’ve seen in a long time, regardless of cost…The performances are outstanding and it’s made with a directorial style which is completely gripping from beginning to end.”

Bruno Coppola

“A really cool film.”
Nik Powell

“I’m gobsmacked at how good it is.”
Neal Keeling, Manchester Evening News

“Absolutely superb…and completely inspiring.”
Chris Bernard – Director, Letter to Brezhnev

“Diary of a Bad Lad” is a 100% independent production from Blackburn-based “Pleased Sheep Films”. It was made on ‘no-budget’.

“Diary of a Bad Lad” – a film made without compromise about people without principles by people without money!
