We've got to shoot a helicopter taking off for the final scene. Any tips? We've only got one go at it...too expensive to redo it. Gonna get everyone i know with a half decent camera to come and film it too...just in case.
What sort of helicopter will it be? That knowledge will determine how far away the microphone will need to be, and where to position it (relative to the aircraft), assuming you're filming the takeoff from the ground.

Filming from inside the aircraft is fraught with problems. There is a high-frequency vibration that will need to be shot on a very fast shutter and then stabilised. And the audio will be crap.

How much are you paying? I know someone with a gazelle who could do with the cash & may work out cheaper. I'm surprised it can't be done for free: All you do is film the talent running to the helicopter and getting in. Then while he's getting out you set up a different shot from behind the aircraft and film the helicopter going off on a paid job.

Well, actually it isn't costing anything. Not sure what the model of the heli is...from what was described i think it may be a Gazelle .Someone is lending us the helicopter and pilot for half a day...no fuel costs either..but we only get one take off and one landing. We can shoot whatever we need to. I've got 3 cameramen filming the take off from the ground, one inside the heli and one 'crash-cam' (an old VX1000) gaffa taped to the bottom of the heli for an interesting POV.

We're going to replace all the dialogue, so we only need to get enough to enable the ADR process to be a bit easier. I was wondering about the wind... will it be strong enough to knock a cam off a tripod at 10m???

Good point about the vibration... the camera inside the heli will be hand held on a rig...so it should be ok.. i guess i'll have the steady cam setting on though..

Thanks for the input. S
